Dominique (22) suddenly died, but it remains unclear whether a fatal accident on A73 could have been prevented | Limburg

The then 22-year-old Dominique Lousberg from Tilburg lost her life November 19, 2017; a wrong-way driver, a 26-year-old motorist of Polish nationality who was also killed in the accident, collided head-on with her car when he came out of the Roertunnel in Roermond.

At Maasbracht, De Pole had entered the A73 via the exit and was driving against traffic in the direction of Roermond at high speed.

Several road users called the police control room to report the wrong-way driver, but it was already too late before the report reached the control room of the Roertunnel via various disks to close it.

The investigations that followed showed that the wrong-way driver detection system in the tunnel was inadequate and that the procedure to close the tunnel was too cumbersome, which meant that the response was not fast enough.

It was seen too much as a tunnel accident. But you should look wider and further away.
