Thomas Abreuthe Dominican who toured New York City and allegedly shot four people aboard a pasola, he fell asleep during their first court appearance on Monday, as they are released strange comments that he did before and after the shooting, such as that a “chip” was implanted in his head and that “people were chasing him.”
The defendant, aged 25, continued to do strange statements as unknown entities wanted him dead, as he attended his arraignment in Queens Criminal Court from his hospital bed, dozing at times and forcing the judge to stop to know he was okay.
“Are you consistent enough to follow these procedures today?” asked Judge Scott Dunn. “You keep closing your eyes, are you alert enough to keep going?”was another of his questions.
But Abreu was visibly disoriented when he managed to stay awake during the virtual hearing, The New York Post rescues.
“What happens is that I think they wanted to kill me or assassinate me”Abreu told a stunned court using an interpreter. “Everyone says that I am innocent. That is the best problem there is,” he said.
The young man did not specify who considered him innocent, since the judge asked him to stop to order a psychological evaluation.
Police and prosecutors accuse Abreu of shooting four people in a span of 12 minutes while driving through Brooklyn and Queens on Saturday morning. One of his victims died that day and another fights for his life.according to the police.
Abreu has been described as “extremely emotionally disturbed” by police sources, something that his boss of five years seemed to repeat when he spoke to the New York outlet on Monday.
According to José Rodríguez’s account, Abreu called on Saturday from his job as a delivery man in seasoning pereza Dominican restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, because “people were after him.”
The defendant also told his boss things in the past, such as that Alexa, Amazon’s virtual assistant, knew what Rodríguez would say before saying it or that he “put a chip in his head,” along with the other employees. “I loved him like a son,” Rodríguez said. “He was on time and he was good…he was a big boy and he never got violent. There were never problems like that. But he said some strange things…he was not right in the head,” he expressed.
Queens Assistant District Attorney Jonathan Selkowe listed more bizarre statements by Abreu, this time allegedly directed at police after his arrest, in court on Monday.
“The Russians are after me, the Chinese are after me, the Italians are after me, Africa is after me”Abreu reportedly told detectives Sunday, according to Selkowe.
“I left my house on Elton St. I used a scooter. I was mugged earlier and someone dropped a bag. And when I looked, there was a gun and I took it and kept it ever since,” the defendant said about the events on Saturday.
“They were chasing me,” Abreu reportedly said. “They are bad people”.
Abreu’s next hearing is set for Thursday.
Abreu is accused of Murder, Attempted Murder, and Firearms Charges by the wave of gunfire, which claimed the life of an 87-year-old man.
