Ramón González, a Dominican immigrant supermarket manager who was planning his 40th wedding anniversary next year, died in a pileup involving four cars and apparently caused by a drunk driver in the Bronx (NYC).
“It’s like a dream. “It’s like it didn’t happen,” he told Daily News González’s younger sister, who asked that her name not be revealed. “This has had a big impact on us.”
González and his wife were traveling in the Honda CR-V driven by his 21 year old son on the freeway Bruckner Expressway cerca de Pelham Parkway at 5:25 a.m. Sunday when they crashed into a 2009 Honda Pilot driven by Corey Miles, 51, who was apparently intoxicated behind the wheel, police and the deceased’s family said.
The collision caused the CR-V to collide with a Honda HR-V driven by a 27-year-old man, which in turn hit a pickup truck with a 53-year-old man behind the wheel, NYPD detailed.
Paramedics quickly took González and his wife to the Jacobi Medical Center, but only she was able to save herself.. The couple lived in Wakefield (The Bronx) and in 39 years of marriage they had three children and three grandchildren.
The driver of the Honda HR-V was also taken to the Jacobi, along with Miles and a 49-year-old woman who was traveling with him. González’s son and the truck driver refused medical attention. Police charged Miles, a resident of Rockaway Beach, Queens, with driving while intoxicated.
The sudden loss of González, who was left as family patriarch After the death of his father two years ago, he has left his family in shock. “I’m trying to understand reality,” said his younger brother, Agustín González. “You don’t expect this kind of thing to happen.”
González emigrated to the United States from the Dominican Republic in the 1980s and he married in 1985. “He was very dedicated to his wife and children, to his entire family,” his brother added.
He worked at the same “Fine Fair” supermarket in Williamsbridge (The Bronx) for more than 30 years, quickly rising from maintenance worker to manager thanks to his hard work, according to his boss, Carlos Collado.
Hours later, also on Sunday, another Hispanic family experienced a tragedy in the tri-state area, when a child of Salvadoran origin died in a crash in Newark (NJ) and his cousin ended up seriously hospitalized.

The authorities remember that there is zero tolerance for drivers who drive at excess speed and/or under the influence of alcohol and drugs..
