Adolfina Martínez chooses clothes for students from a school who need help in Sunset Park.
It has been a week since he opened this store on Fifth Avenue to sell the donations that the neighbors give him.
The money that is raised is destined to different altruistic causes in Brooklyn and in other countries.
Martínez is the creator of the foundation Hand in Hand with Children: “I’ve been doing it for a long time, from a very young age; but I’ve always done it, practically, on my own.”
Adolfina is a domestic worker and, at the moment, depends on the donations of neighbors and the other six women, who together with her tend her place to maintain the foundation.
“They have told me, a foundation is only for rich people or millionaires or professionals. When you are poor or come from a humble family, you know what the humble need; you know what others need,” explains Martínez.
In the premises you can find new and used clothes, dishes and appliances, at very low prices.
And according to its founder: “The prices are cheap because they are accessible that way. Because I go back and repeat, there are people in Sunset park who cannot buy a microwave. At the same time that people can bring their donations but whoever needs can also come and get “.
Martínez will travel to the Caribbean at the end of this week to make a donation for those most in need: “We are preparing food for 250 families in a very poor town called Juan Santiago, in the Dominican Republic.”
She is also raising funds and toys to give to underprivileged children on December 26 at Sunset Park.
“But that child who could have nothing can come here and we are going to have a toy for him,” says Martínez.
