World number 4 Dominic Thiem broke the barrier for the next generation when he won the US Open last year. The Austrian champions have increased their level of play in the last two seasons.
In his last meetings with Nadal and Djokovic, the Austrian achieved important victories against the two best players in the world. Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem recently announced that American tennis player Andre Agassi was his childhood hero.
The 50-year-old former player won eight Grand Slam titles and won all four majors during his career. The four-time Australian Open champion won all of tennis’s major awards, including a gold medal at the Olympic Games (Atlanta 1996).
Dominic Thiem: “I would have liked to have played against Andre Agassi”
When Thiem was asked about his childhood idol, he said: “Andre Agassi. His outfit was legendary, a cool guy, especially for kids.
We met a few years ago, it was a very pleasant meeting. I would have loved to play against Andre. “Agassi had a great rivalry with his compatriot Pete Sampras. After his retirement in 2006, Andre became involved in the tennis community and participated in various tournaments as a spectator.
He took on a coaching role by joining Djokovic’s team in the 2017-2018 season. He is currently advising tennis players such as the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov, the Canadian Eugenie Bouchard and the young American Sebastian Korda.
Interestingly, Thiem’s journey ended at the Australian Open 2021 through Dimitrov. In the first round match, the Austrian defended himself brilliantly against Nick Kyrgios. He rallied the match after losing the first two sets to win it in five sets.
Although the match was played in the opening rounds, it is considered to be one of the best games in the tournament. The 2020 US Open Champion has already confirmed his participation in Doha, where he will challenge Roger Federer on his return to the Tour and at the Miami Masters 1000. Photo credit: First Sportz
