World No. 4 Dominic Thiem did not get off to an ideal start to the 2021 tennis season. The Austrian failed to reach the quarterfinals at the 2021 Australian Open and lost in the first round of the 2021 Dubai Tennis Championships.
He later withdrew from the 2021 Miami Open as he did not feel quite fit. In a recent interview, Dominic Thiem claimed that things are getting more balanced in tennis these days.
He stated that previously only Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic used to win the Grand Slam titles. However, he believes that this is no longer the case in sport. “Things are getting more balanced.
Roland Garros is still a special situation because Nadal is above the others there. Elsewhere, it’s open, ”Thiem said in the interview. Although he mentioned that it is now open for everyone to win a Grand Slam, he stressed that the French Open is still a special situation.
The 2020 US Open winner admitted that Rafael Nadal is still really tough to beat there. Interestingly, Thiem lost to Nadal in two consecutive Roland Garros finals.
Thiem reiterated the value of next-generation players in the sport, saying that now six or seven people are capable of winning a Grand Slam title.
He emphasized that those times are long past when only Federer, Nadal or Djokovic had the potential to win a major. “Now six or seven people can win a major. Before it was only Federer, Nadal and Djokovic ”, added the Austrian player.
Thiem is not in his best shape at the moment and will therefore be desperate to make a good comeback next season on clay. With a poor win-loss record of 5-4 in 2021 so far, he’s sure to like to put the bad start behind him and build momentum as soon as possible.
