Bresnik now coaches Monfils. He is Thiem’s opponent at the ATP Cup.
In April 2019, Dominic Thiem separated from coach Günter Bresnik after 15 years. A mud fight ensued. There will be a reunion at the ATP Cup (February 1st to 5th). The 59-year-old will train the world number 11 Gael Monfils in the future. In Melbourne, Thiem meets the French of all people – and thus his ex-trainer.
So it’s going to be explosive. As tennis fans, we can look forward to real top duels! Austria’s team, led by Dominic Thiem, will face Italy in Group C alongside France at the $ 4.5 million tournament in Melbourne. US Open winner Thiem faces Bresnik protégé Monfils (ATP-11th) and Matteo Berrettini (10th) in the top games. Only the group winners advance to the semi-finals. Austria will kick off with Italy on Tuesday (midnight, CET), and France will be waiting on Thursday.
Thiem makes it clear: “We have a strong team”
Austria plays alongside Thiem with the second top 100 man Dennis Novak and in doubles with Philipp Oswald / Tristan-Samuel Weissborn. At the premiere of the new team competition a year ago, the red-white-red men’s team was eliminated before the quarter-finals. “We definitely want to play well. I also think that we have good chances because we have a strong team,” said Thiem recently.
Defending champion Serbia with Novak Djokovic meets Germany and Canada in Group A. The event is the dress rehearsal for the Australian Open from February 8th, all top 10 players except Roger Federer (SUI) take part.
