Great performance by Russian players in the game against Edmonton.
“Columbus” This is one of the most Russian clubs in the NHL, and not only are many of our compatriots on the team, but they also play key roles. Even taking into account that the injured Dmitry Voronkov and Daniil Tarasov, who was the reserve goalkeeper, were not included in the line-up for the match against Edmonton, there were enough representatives of our country in the Blue Jackets.
And they showed themselves clearly, helping the team defeat a real opponent. In addition, after a meeting with the defender of Russia, the strongest player on the planet was injured.
The coach broke the best bond
The start of the season was difficult for Columbus. The team literally alternates between successful performances and failures: with three victories, the Blue Jackets had four losses before the meeting with Edmonton, one of which was in overtime. Despite the lack of stability, the attacking trio of Kirill Marchenko – Sean Monahan – Egor Chinakhov showed themselves clearly. At the same time, the forwards stood out not only from the rest of their players, but from the entire league.
And the day before, the Money Puck portal shared statistics according to how the Columbus trio lead in the number of expected goals in the NHL. In addition, this unit was also confident in defense and on average conceded less than a goal per game.
– Marchenko joked that he and Yegor Chinakhov started calling their new center Sean Monahan Sean Monakhanov. “He clearly has great chemistry with his Russian teammates,” North American journalist Jeff Svoboda wrote on social media.
Surprisingly, Dean Evason destroyed the team’s best offensive line, sending Chinakhov to the second line. Experts explained this decision by saying that Evason wants to improve the game of Adam Fantilli, who scored “2 + 1” in seven games. However, lineup changes did not stop Columbus from defeating the Stanley Cup final, and Fantili began scoring points.
Edmonton’s unsuccessful game
The game started off just awful for Edmonton. Already at the 37th second, team captain Connor McDavid broke out of the blue. The attacker entered the attacking zone at full speed and at that moment saw Ivan Provorov, who was running under him to make a power move.
McDavid decided to play forward and show his body, but he did it unsuccessfully and went down, falling with all the weight on his ankle. Fans immediately assumed the Canadian had a sprained ankle, but the Oilers didn’t reveal any details about the injury.
Edmonton’s pain continued, and in the third minute, Columbus turned on the power play. Monahan scored off a Marchenko pass in an uneven lane. The Blue Jackets then scored twice more on Fantilli and Cole Sillinger.
Without a captain, Edmonton did not look toothless in attack, but it also could not take advantage of dangerous opportunities. But Columbus continued to spoil the opposing goalkeeper’s statistics, but in the second period the guests limited themselves to just one goal. This time Mathieu Olivier scored.
In the final 20 minutes, Edmonton’s decline only continued. Mikael Pykhtia made the score unethical with passes from Fantilli and Sillinger – 5:0. And Columbus didn’t stop there. A few moves later, Marchenko passed to Chinakhov, who fired a shot almost from the blue line. The puck hit the boards and bounced right off the stick of Monahan, who easily flicked it into the empty corner.
The Blue Jackets were on their way to a confident and “dry” victory in the Stanley Cup final, but Latvian goalkeeper Elvis Merzlikins was not allowed to keep a clean sheet. 27 seconds before the siren, Mattias Ekholm converted the majority – 1:6. Merzlikins was so upset that he hit the post with his stick in anger. Despite this, his statistics are still decent – 31 blocked shots.
As for Russian hockey players, Marchenko was supported and Chinakhov was supported. Now Kirill has 11 (4 + 7) points, and Egor has 8 (3 + 5).
