Dom Pérignon blesses Basquiat in New York

The guard, in a dark suit, earns his daily wages. Behind it is displayed In Italian one of the most popular works of Jean-Michel Basquiat, whose size and brightness is so great that everyone comes to look at it or take a picture.

Most of the guests come with a drink in hand. Always friendly, the guard repeats the chant: “Leave the glass on this table,” located a couple of meters away from the canvas.

It is about preventing the liquid, even if it is Dom Pérignon, vintage 2015, from being accidentally spilled on that wonderful creation. Sorry about the painting and the champagne.

But on Thursday night at the Brant Foundation (non-profit) in Manhattan’s East Village, the blessing of the iconic painting of the 1980s with that soup of fame and history, named in honor of Pierre Pérignon, metaphorically, a Benedictine monk who discover the way to make sparkling wines.

A great collection of celebrities from art, cinema, music, fashion or youtuber They gathered in that area which is the house In Italian a piece that shows Basquiat’s beginnings as a graffiti artist.

The purpose of this meeting was to present the combination of two legends separated by time and now united in the new special edition Vintage 2015 with which Dom Pérignon pays tribute to the artist, connecting on the logo label the French brand and that work Basquiat painted when he was 20 (he died at 27). The collaboration also extends to creating three special cases for these bottles. Each chest contains a reproduction of a part of the previously mentioned painting that allows for assembly.

In this way, the legend of painting is included in the list of creative people with whom the Champagne company has established a collaboration. It started in 2005 with fashion designer and photographer Karl Lagerfeld. He was followed by designer Marc Newson, filmmaker David Lynch, artist Jeff Koons, designer Iris van Herpen, artist Michael Riedel, designer Tokujin Yoshioka, and musicians Lenny Kravitz and Lady Gaga.

In addition, as in the case of Basquiat, a tribute was given to his friend and mentor, Andy Warhol (2010). These two generations were visible in the exhibition of polaroids held by the photographer Maripol, one of the guests, at that time in more bohemian New York. Their pictures, in which Madonna and others would now exclaim “how young we were!”, were shown in a room attached to the central canvas.

On the upper floor, a jazz band and then DJ Justin Straus enlivened the evening, and on the roof the transparency corresponded to the elegance of New York and the bright view. The common thread was Dom Pérignon. People would go from floor to floor without putting down their glasses, except to take pictures with Basquiat’s legacy.
