Dolly Parton and Miley Cyrus: The Iconic Partnership and Enduring Bond

World stars of all ages are still lining up to collaborate with Dolly Parton. Miley Cyrus also sings on Parton’s new record. And it is certainly not the first time that ‘The Queen of Nashville’ and her goddaughter have performed a duet.

Sting, Stevie Nicks, P!NK, Elton John, Lizzo, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr. These are just a small selection of the artists that can be heard on Parton’s new album Rockstar. But none of them work with the 77-year-old country legend as often as Cyrus.

Parton met Miley’s father Billy Ray on the country music circuit. The two worked together regularly and became friends. “When Miley was born, I wanted to be her godmother, her fairy godmother,” Parton told SiriusXM.

Her goddaughter was also introduced to the entertainment industry at a young age. Cyrus, now thirty, took on the role of Hannah Montana in the Disney series of the same name at the age of thirteen. The singer could be seen as herself. It was therefore logical that Parton would appear in the series as her godmother.

“I remember the first time we read through the script with the cast,” Cyrus later said on Jimmy Fallon’s talk show. “I had pimple cream on my face and was wearing pajamas. Dolly came in in a pink, silk robe. Her hairstyle almost didn’t fit through the door.” Parton looks back on this with warm feelings: “We worked so well together. And thanks to her young fans, I also gained a new audience.”

‘I will never speak ill of her’

After Cyrus said goodbye to her character Hannah Montana, she wanted to build a career for herself as a singer. Her more sexual and outspoken image came her way around the release of hits like We Can’t Stop in Wrecking Ball to face a lot of criticism. But not from Parton.

The country legend has repeatedly expressed her support for her goddaughter. “She sometimes does things to shock and she’s young so she can afford it. I will never, ever speak ill of her, no matter what she does. I just hope she comes out of it well.”

Parton understands why Cyrus sometimes seemed to rebel against what was expected of her. “She needed to break away from Hannah Montana to become Miley Cyrus. She tried everything, but no one would let her be herself. So she had to use extreme methods and she succeeded,” Parton said in US Weekly.

The extreme actions Parton is referring to are the criticized performances where Cyrus twerked and the music video Wrecking Ball in which she sits naked on a wrecking ball. Wrecking Ball is, by the way, the song that godmother and goddaughter perform together on the album Rockstar.

‘Better than your wildest dreams’

Parton and Cyrus have recorded songs together several times. This is how Parton could be heard on Rainbowland from Cyrus’ album Younger Now. Cyrus, in turn, made her appearance on Parton’s Christmas album.

The singer who scored big hits with songs like Jolene in 9 To 5 says she regularly asks her goddaughter for advice. “Everyone always asks me what advice I give Miley. But no one gives Miley advice. She is just as stubborn as me, but we respect each other and share experiences. I tell her things like mother, aunt or godmother. But I ask her also questions about my own career, because I want to be involved and influential in the industry as long as I live.”

In 2021, Parton was named by Time Magazine named one of the most influential people on earth. Cyrus was allowed to write the profile about her, in which she describes her godmother as a “divine figure”.

“There’s a theory that you should never meet your heroes, but I wish everyone had the chance to meet Dolly Parton. She’s better than your wildest dreams.”
