Kochi: Assistant Private Secretary to the Speaker K Ayyappan appeared before customs for questioning in a dollar smuggling case. He was present at the Customs and Private office in Kochi. Ayyappan reached the Ernakulam guest house at 8 pm and reached the customs office in an auto rickshaw.
Ayyappan has been summoned seeking details of the statement made by Swapna Suresh against Speaker P Sriramakrishnan. Ayyappan had evaded giving notices twice in the last few days for various reasons. The final reply was that it should be postponed for the time being as the assembly session was about to begin.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Secretary himself had sent a letter to Customs questioning the action taken on the notice issued to Ayyappan. Customs, however, rejected the Assembly Secretary’s claims that the Speaker’s Assistant Private Secretary had legal protection, and responded to the Assembly Secretary with harsh criticism that the Assembly Act was not meant to protect criminals. After this, Ayyappan appeared before the customs today.
