Doha, March 11 (QNA) – The Ministry of Public Health launched the third national oral and dental health survey for male and female students aged 12 and 16 years, in cooperation with the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, Hamad Medical Corporations and Primary Health Care, the Medical Services Department of the Ministry of Interior, Qatar University, and Qatar. The survey includes about 2,300 students, both male and female, in public and private schools, with the aim of determining the extent of the prevalence of tooth decay and gum disease among students in all participating schools in the public and private sectors in the State of Qatar, for the age group between 12 and 16 years.
The Ministry organized a number of training workshops for the medical staff involved in implementing the survey, which included a practical application and high-level training, which was implemented by a number of specialized doctors, and included all the steps required to be implemented in the survey.
Regarding this, Sheikh Dr. Mohammed bin Hamad Al Thani, Director of the Department of Non-communicable Disease Prevention Programs at the Ministry of Public Health, said that the survey contributes to reaching more accurate results about the extent of oral and dental health care among male and female students from the target group, and the harms that they may suffer. Some of them are included, pointing out that a specialized and trained medical team is examining the male and female students participating in the survey through a mobile clinic, where the examination includes filling out a questionnaire by the students’ parents that contains some questions related to the nature of the foods that young students eat to determine their rate of caries and to know the relationship. between the type of food and the rate of decay, in addition to assessing the extent of the impact of oral health on the lives of young students, provided that at the end of the examination the students are provided with some instructions on the extent of their need to visit the dentist.
He stated that the survey contributes to providing officials and supervisors of oral and dental health in the State of Qatar with the necessary information to make recommendations related to how to reduce the spread of oral and dental diseases, and to develop optimal plans to prevent them, as the Ministry is currently working on preparing to launch the fourth national oral and dental health survey for adults from Amer. 18 years and above, as part of its keenness to ensure the presence of all segments of society in dental surveys; With the aim of enhancing awareness and providing distinguished health services regarding oral and dental health in the State of Qatar.
It is noteworthy that the Ministry of Public Health conducted two other surveys, the first in 2011 and the second in 2017, during which the prevalence of tooth decay was determined among male and female students, Qatari and non-Qatari, in addition to knowing the relationship between the level of oral health information and health practices, including dietary habits, as It was found that the rate of tooth decay among male and female school students at that time was about 85.4 percent.
