Dog’s Gaze Film: A Unique Hybrid Screening with Live Music by Bel Tempo

In the beginning there was music. Then an international team was formed and the film “Dog’s Gaze” was born, which will premiere on Friday, October 13, in an unusual hybrid screening. In the 30-minute film, half is dedicated to dialogues, half to the music created by the group “Bel Tempo”, which will be played live.

“This album, ‘Pessimismus’, created by ‘Bel Tempo’, was written before there were any ideas for the film. Then, inspired by the music, this story of a young sailor, a coming-of-age story, a guy from Vecmīlgravja is in the throes of life and love and in various experiences,” says the director of the film, Ieva Aleksa.

The members of “Bel Tempo” say that with the film, the group’s music has gained a new lease of life. When adapting to the film, there was no need for major changes in the musical material, only correctly placed accents.

Júlijs Melngailis, a musician of the “Bel Tempo” band, reveals: “That album also has a very strong concept, maybe the listeners don’t perceive it as strongly as they will perceive it today, when there is a story along with the music.”

The biggest challenge was synchronizing the film with the live performance. Júlijs Melngailis says: “Our solution is quite interesting, we run the film through the computer. Not from the projector up there, but from the computer, through the program that makes the music. Everything is organized, quite set in stone, I think there will be no problems at all.”

Actor Kārlis Arnolds Avots plays the main role in the film, while Latvian-British musician Elīza Legzdiņa not only sings the musical accompaniment, but also takes on the role of a mermaid. She calls the film team her creative family, so she is also present at the premiere and wishes every viewer to experience it.

“I hope that they will understand the theme and the story that we have all created together. Also all of Ieva’s beautiful thoughts and ideas that have entered there. I hope that they will enjoy it and understand that it is such a multidimensional piece of Latvian art show,” says Elīza Legzdiņa.

The filmmakers hope that the opening screening of “Dog’s Look” will be followed by others – both in Latvia and elsewhere in the world.
