Dogs and horses used in new search for missing surfer NOW

On Sunday, the beach of Scheveningen will continue to search for the missing 23-year-old surfer from Delft. Because of the strong wind, Search and Rescue-Nederland (SAR) cannot enter the water, so the group uses search dogs and horses.

“We are leaving the water team at home today,” a SAR spokesperson told NU.nl. “Because of the strong wind, we cannot risk getting into trouble ourselves.”

Instead, special search dogs are deployed, trained in recognizing a dead body. Horses and quads are also used to cover a lot of distance.

SAR continues to hope that the missing surfer will be found. “Especially for the parents. It is of course looking for a needle in a haystack, but the wind is inland and that is favorable. That increases the chance that someone will wash ashore.”

‘Body washed away from surfer’

For a moment there was hope that the surfer was found on Sunday morning, after a report of a body washed up on the coast near Wassenaarseslag. After an initial investigation, the police do not assume that it concerns the missing Delft citizen.

SAR was at sea with a sonar boat on Friday, but that search was unsuccessful. The surfer’s body has been searched for since Monday last Monday. He was seen at sea a day later, but drifted away before the body could be recovered.

Last Monday, besides the 23-year-old man from Delft, four other water sports enthusiasts died in the sea at Scheveningen. The bodies of this foursome have now been recovered. One person survived the drama and is back home after hospitalization.
