The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Nassau County is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the person responsible for the multiple stabbing of a dog in Freeport, Long Island.

“I’ve seen some pretty horrible things, but the number of times he was stabbed it’s unimaginable how someone could do that,” said Ashley Behrens, acting director of the Hempstead City Animal Shelter.

The dog, a two-year-old terrier mix, is walking, jogging and thriving just one month after being found with 17 stab wounds all over his body.according to county officials, reported Pix11. Who saved his life They named him “Cornell.”

District Attorney Anne Donnelly said that on Nov. 27, a woman found the unmarked dog bleeding in the road and decided to take it to a local pet shelter. That person has been questioned and is not a suspect in the investigation.

“Some of the stab wounds caused his lungs to lose air (…) and they had to be drained several times,” said prosecutor Donnelly. “The other stab wounds were cleaned, stapled or stitched.”

According to prosecutors, the woman who found him made her first stop for help at “Bobbi and the Strays Animal Shelter,” but was told that the dog was so seriously injured that they would not be able to care for him. He then went to the Hempstead Animal Shelter, where he was taken to a veterinarian.

In a remarkable demonstration of resilience, Cornell survived. The shelter is now looking for a new foster or adoptive home for the dog, who has fully recovered a month after the near-fatal attack.

The person responsible for the attack could face a series of crimes for aggravated cruelty towards animals. Anyone with information should call the Animal Crimes Hotline at 516-571-7755.
