Walking services and dog shelters can hardly keep up with the demand, now that people are going to the office more often, De Telegraaf reports after a tour.
More pets were purchased during the corona crisis than before. Working from home and the lockdown in particular contributed to this. During the corona period, an estimated 200,000 dogs were added.
Especially in cities, reception centers indicate that they are completely full. In Amsterdam, for example, a dog shelter says that it has stopped the waiting list and no new animals are accepted in other cities either.
Vol
Carel van de Voorde, the owner of an Amersfoort dog boarding house, is late NOS Radio 1 News know how to be completely full. “We have had a waiting list again since the autumn holidays, but this summer the waiting list was much longer.” He was offered twice as many dogs as usual.
Dog walking services and apps that link owners to a dog walker are also extremely busy, they confirm to the newspaper.
Puppy courses
Dibevo, the trade association of enterprising pet specialists, says it is not surprised by the outcome. Chairman Gijs van den Assum said at the beginning of the year that there was a long waiting list for puppy courses and that there was an enormous growth in the number of pets purchased.
“It’s not surprising that they have to be taken care of somewhere when people have to go back to the office and go out.” It was feared that a large part of those animals would eventually end up in the shelter, but there is no question of a huge influx there, says the Animal Protection.
