Dog infected with Coronavirus in Hong Kong

In Hong Kong, the Corona virus was found in a dog. The Hong Kong government announced this on Friday. Since the Covid-19 outbreak, many pet owners have asked whether their animals could become infected. It now seems answered. In Hong Kong it would be a “mild case” of the flu.

It is unknown to what extent the discovery of the Coronavirus in a pet is a reason for additional worries. The Hong Kong Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Nature Conservation (AFCD) says it does not know whether infection of pets is more common and whether the animals can transmit the virus to humans. For the time being, the dog is the only known case of Corona infection in a pet. The dog is quarantined in an animal shelter and is being examined.

The ministry does call on pet owners to hand over their pets to the AFCD if the Corona virus is suspected. The animals are then quarantined in special shelters and examined.
