There are over 130,000 dogs in Berlin. Like us humans, they sometimes break their foot, upset their stomach or have to have an operation. With simple dog insurance, it’s no problem – actually.
But more and more dog owners are angry. Because the current price increases do not stop at man’s best friend.
Dogs soon to be a luxury item in Berlin?
Whether it’s food, gas or rent, prices have risen to unfathomable heights in many areas in recent years. This now also affects many dog owners.

A woman now comments on this on Facebook: Her insurance with Agila is now being increased for the second year in a row. The price had already risen by 25 euros per month in November 2023, and now there has been a further increase of 12.74 euros. Her four-legged friend now costs an impressive 100.64 euros a month. For them, the dog becomes a luxury item “and that just can’t be right!”
Insurance denies allegations
Other dog owners in Berlin are also outraged. “My insurance went up by 70 euros,” explains a woman in the comments. The price would then be 198 euros from November. “I have now decided to resign.” Others are also already considering taking this step. The financial burden has simply become too high.
But how does Agila Insurance respond to the allegations that a dog is becoming more and more of a luxury? When asked by BERLIN LIVE, spokeswoman Anica Lehmann explains: “Contribution increases result from the respective cost developments. These are neither determined nor controlled by us. These costs were often constant over many years. In recent years, however, they have risen significantly more strongly and for a longer period of time.”
So that the insurance company can continue to provide its services, it cannot avoid raising tariffs. But according to Lehmann, a positive development can be seen: “The declining inflation rates in Germany give reason to hope that costs will now rise less sharply again.”
More news from Berlin:
On average for all tariffs, Agila therefore assumes that contributions will stabilize in 2025. Depending on the tariff, variations of this forecast are possible.
The influence of Germany’s economic environment should also not be underestimated. This is “dependent on many strong foreign influences and is currently characterized by great uncertainty.”
So the prices are not only in the hands of the insurance companies, but are largely dependent on other factors. Dog owners can still hope that there will be no further increases for the time being.
