Six years ago, Dexter escaped from his family’s yard and ran onto the street. A car could no longer avoid it and caught the fur nose. The accident had unexpected consequences.
Luckily, Dexter’s owner found the injured fur nose just a few moments after the serious accident and immediately took him to the vet. There, however, the doctors quickly determined that his right front leg could no longer be healed and had to be amputated. His left front leg also took a beating, but could be saved, reports “CBS News“.
Dog loses leg in accident
A long recovery period followed, and Dexter’s wounds gradually healed. Because his remaining front leg was extremely weak, his keepers got him a custom-made wheelchair that he could use to walk around without front legs. But Dexter didn’t think much of that. When he was lying in the garden with his owner, he suddenly got up and walked up the stairs on two legs.
Dexter is a celebrity
Dexter’s family thought the unusual sight was a one-off, but from that day on, the furry friend was unstoppable: from then on, whenever he wanted to walk somewhere, he did so confidently on two legs. His owners were so inspired by Dexter’s way of dealing with his handicap that they created an Instagram account for him. In the meantime he has become a real celebrity there.
More than 145,000 people are following his adventures on the social network, and some of his fans are even traveling to Colorado to see Dexter live in his hometown of Ouray. The fur nose is also a welcome guest of honor at parades and festivals and the owners now even get mail from all over the world.
