BROOK PARK, Ohio – A family could be homeless for up to eight months after a destructive fire broke out in their kitchen.
Fortunately, the culprit who started the flames was caught on video, as it has to be seen to be believed.
“If we didn’t have it on camera, it would be a crazy story; you wouldn’t believe it,” said homeowner Chris DiLuzio.
DiLuzio said he was at work Wednesday when he received a call he will never forget, from the fire department informing him that his house was on fire.
“It was definitely panic and fear at the same time because they said they only located one dog, and my first thought was that my son, my niece and my mother-in-law were here,” DiLuzio said.
Luckily, no one was home, but DiLuzio says the kitchen security camera video tells the whole story.
In the video, one of the family’s pets, Harvey, can be seen jumping on a chair and trying to grab a snack from the stove top.
As he reaches for the container, Harvey inadvertently turns on the oven.
Moments later, a flame breaks out and the kitchen quickly catches fire.
“He’s just fat and hungry,” DiLuzio said.
DiLuzio said all of the pets were saved and the fire is covered by insurance, but now he, his wife and six children will have to be out of the house for months to start the school year while repairs are made.
And, of course, not everything can be replaced.
“We lost a lot of irreplaceable things that have no value,” DiLuzio said.
There is an online fundraiser for the family to help with the cost of expenses while they wait for the damage to be repaired.
