The week of February 7, 2021 saw yet another mobilization of staff at the Louis-Domergue hospital, then a meeting of parliamentarians with ministerial advisers. However, the reconstruction of the establishment is not about to be completed.

Does the state really want to rebuild La Trinité hospital? For about twenty years that the site has to start, nothing has happened. For ten years that 40 million euros have been released for this purpose, nothing has emerged. For more than ten years that the town, through its former mayor Louis-Joseph Manscour, has made 5 hectares of land available to the University Hospital Center, nothing concrete has happened.
Several signs show that senior officials of the Ministry of Health, who often take the place of ministers, are dragging their feet. Their calculations are simple. Having such a large number of hospitals within a radius of just 30 kilometers is budget nonsense.
The accounts are done: Pierre Zobda-Quitman (or La Meynard), the Maison de femme, de la Mère et de l’Enfant not far, the Emma Ventura center on the border of Fort-de-France with Schoelcher and Mangot Vulcin, at Lamentin.
Total: four hospitals in the same sector, to which must be added that of La Trinité, these five establishments making up the University Hospital Center. What is the use of refurbishing a dilapidated establishment, when the population served can easily reach the Foyalaise region?
Five hospitals within a radius of 30 kilometers
Especially since the old Lamentin hospital has recently been relocated. Therefore, it becomes useless to have a brand new hospital so close to others. The logic of the technocrats is perfect and consistent, on paper. They are used to thinking according to criteria that reality does not adapt well.
Their analysis does not correspond to the wishes of the population concerned. And it is disputed by health professionals. Some of them are campaigning to create from this hospital, which must become efficient again, an essential link in the new care master plan. In complementarity with the other establishments of the CHU, the Louis-Domergue hospital could become a center of excellence in environmental medicine.
Pathologies directly or indirectly linked to our exposure to tobacco, alcohol, drugs and pesticides are becoming more and more prevalent in the population. Why not reorient our health system while taking into account the evolution of our lifestyles?
Local specialists ask the question, without an answer for the moment. An option that would offer a new vocation to this hospital which one wonders if the State really wants to rebuild it.
