does the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra outperform the iPhone 14 Pro?

While Apple pursues a relatively conservative and iterative policy on its products, Samsung stands out more and more with smartphones offering technologies that are sometimes clearly superior.

Despite the arrival of a foldable range, the Korean still retains more classic phones, proving Apple right who does not necessarily dare to embark on iFoldat least for now.

Galaxy S23, S23+ et S23 Ultra

There was a time when Apple blithely laughed at the Windows versions (Pro, Family etc.), but the range of iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are now wreaking havoc in the nomenclature. At Samsung, same fight with the new Galaxy S23, S23+ and S23 Ultraeach in its own segment – even if customers often don’t understand much about it.

These models adopt screens of 6.1″, 6.6″ and 6.8″ respectively -yes, you read that right, the petit Galaxy S23 has the same panel as an iPhone 14 Pro Max! It’s really time for Apple to increase the size of its smartphones a bit, right? All therefore carry AMOLED screens at 120Hz (the equivalent of the ProMotion), with completely edge-to-edge panels where the iPhone still has beautiful borders.

200MP, 8K and giant screen!

On the photo side, the Ultra version offers a 200MP sensor while the other 2 must be satisfied with 50MP -where the iPhone is limited to 48MP on the Pro. For the rest of the sensors, you will have to settle for 10MP (zoom), 12MP (wide angle) and 12MP (selfie), which is still very honest. The Ultra version also offers a 10x optical zoom, compared to 3x for the iPhone 14 Pro. In video, Samsung has been managing 8K for several years now, where Apple is limited to 4K60 in HDR10.

Samsung claims to have improved night shooting and overall image quality on all optics. The autofocus is faster and the selfie camera adopts “Super HDR”. Finally, note the arrival of a dual optical stabilization360 degree audio recording (stereo on iPhone) and AI is supposed to better handle the dynamics of the people in the image.

The S23 offers 1TB storage (maximum), 5000mAh battery, IP68 water resistance, Gorilla Glass Victus 2, S Pen support, and Wi-Fi 6E. It will be possible to identify with the finger or the face. Finally, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 should be satellite compatible (like the iPhone 14).

Every Galaxy S23 comes with a USB C cable (no Lightning here) but without charger (optional).

The Galaxy S23 will be available in colors (Black, Cream, Green, and Lavender) from €963 (€959 on sale on Amazon), €1,219 and €1,419 (128 or 256GB of storage on the Ultra) for pre-order. As always, Samsung is offering deals if you pre-order now, especially on memory.

So, what to shake the iPhone? While it is obvious that Apple customers are now largely captive to the brand, some functions are actually quite nice (WiFi 6E, very large screen, 200MP sensor, 10x zoom…), it is not not sure that Apple manages to catch up on all fronts. Conversely, the iPhone is often praised for the quality of its videos (HDR, stabilization, dynamics, etc.), its complete ecosystem (AirDrop, iCloud, etc.) and the overall finish of its products.
