It is a virus that the world thought was (almost) rid of. Poliomyelitis, whose number of contaminations has been reduced by 99% for three decades, had almost disappeared in recent years. But in July, the State of New York launched an alert: a case was recorded there, a first for almost ten years, in a person paralyzed in the legs.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), he might not be the only one. Indeed, several samples taken in Rockland County, where the patient resides, north of New York, show that the virus was detected in sewage, as it was in neighboring Orange County.
Thereby, “hundreds” people in New York could be infected. “Although no additional cases have been identified at this time, these results indicate that there is more than one person shedding the virus in their feces in these communities”believe the CDC, in remarks reported by ABC.
