Does sexism scandal cost the main sponsor?

The scandal surrounding the sexist banner in the game against Hartberg could have far-reaching consequences for SK Rapid.

In a letter to the Hütteldorfer dated June 23, which is available from APA, main sponsor Wien Energie clarifies that the situation will be monitored “very closely” in the coming months. One sees oneself forced to “take appropriate steps in case of need”.

Before the home game against Hartberg on June 21, a banner with sexist content hung in front of the orphaned Block West caused a stir. It was only removed about 15 minutes before the game started.

Premature termination of contract possible

Rapids business manager Christoph Peschek saw “no scandal” in a TV interview because the issue had been resolved before the kick-off. Rapid attaches great importance to freedom of expression and democracy. The media outcry was great.

Rapid and Peschek made several apologies in the following days for the tasteless action. It contradicts the mission statement of the association. “Sexism has nothing to do with freedom of expression,” said Peschek in a video statement. “From the outset, all responsible parties have no understanding of the choice of words,” he said.

Criticism came from various sides. The league’s ethics committee has now initiated proceedings. The club was asked to comment, a verdict is expected before the end of the season on July 15.

In the letter from Wien Energie to President Martin Bruckner and Peschek, sent two days after the incident, it was said that Peschek’s interview on match day had been found “more than strange”. Such an action also has a negative impact on the main sponsor’s image.

Wien Energie refers to contractually agreed points and the associated right to “reduce the lump sum fixed amount and prematurely terminate the sponsorship contract for important reasons”. Clear consequences for those responsible for the action are required. Wien Energie confirms the authenticity of the document on request.
