It’s strange if your child predicts the death of the hamster, has invisible friends or talks about visits from deceased loved ones. Does my child have a sixth sense? These mothers wonder.
Do what your mother says
Lieke (29), mother of Beau (5) and Aimée (1): “I got shivers down my spine when Beau said out of nowhere that grandma told her to go to the doctor. After all, I was coughing like that. “Grandma says you have to be careful.” I was shocked. My mother had died the year before from lung cancer. She had always smoked like a heretic. I smoked myself too. I couldn’t stop. I coughed my lungs out, but was too freaked out to go to the doctor. It was really something for my mother to encourage me to go anyway. I made an appointment the same day. It turned out that I had double bronchitis and was close to pneumonia. I went on antibiotics and never smoked again. I really see it as a warning from my mother.”
The baby is home alone
Marissa (38), mother of Luca (5) and Nikki
: “Luca always says he sees his dead baby sister. Our daughter Nikki had a chromosome abnormality and was only a few days old. She died at home. Luca likes to go to her old room to ‘talk’ to her. We all think that’s fine and dandy and we take it seriously. Sometimes it produces surprised reactions when he confides to complete strangers that he still often talks to his dead sister. Or even hilarious ones, which secretly make us laugh a little. For example, if we are in an amusement park and someone asks Luca if he also has brothers and sisters, he calmly says: ‘Yes, another baby sister, but she is alone at home’.”
And now it’s done
Chrisje (40), mother of Boet (11) and Duuk (9): “As a toddler, Duuk often saw a man with a gray beard in his bedroom. He would wake up at night crying and keep shouting for the bearded gentleman to leave. My husband and I had no idea what to do with it. Eventually I started googling how to banish ‘spirit visitations’. Duuk only wanted to sleep in our bed and did not dare to enter his room. I got the tip online to solve it with my voice. With Duuk by my hand, I went to stand in his empty room in the dark in the evening. Three times I shouted very loudly and clearly that the man was not welcome in our house. I shouted that he was scaring our child and politely asked him to leave. I have no idea what it was, but the fact is that Duuk has never been bothered by uninvited guests again.”
