Does Diet Influence Depression? New Study Reveals Surprising Link

JABAR EXPRESS- Can depression be influenced by your diet? A recent study published in JAMA Open Network found that eating unhealthy foods can increase your risk of developing depression.

This research was conducted on a large scale by researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. They were interested in identifying whether there was an association between certain types of food and the incidence of depression in a group of women aged 42 to 62 years.

The hypothesis they proposed was that highly processed foods may increase the risk of Major Depressive Disorder in these women. Unfortunately, the data collected supports this hypothesis, showing a link between the consumption of ultraprocessed foods and the risk of developing Major Depressive Disorder.

These foods include ready-to-eat food to processed meat, which are then grouped into nine categories. The female participants were asked to fill out a survey questionnaire that recorded their food consumption patterns over the past four years.

Researchers also consider and control various factors that can influence research results, such as age, medication use, sleep quality, other physical conditions, and other variables. The results show that individuals who consume these types of foods tend to be more susceptible to Major Depressive Disorder.

The foods that can trigger Major Depressive Disorder are very varied and are generally found in many markets. You can try doing a quick look around your kitchen and you will be surprised to see how many processed foods there are. Some examples of foods that have the potential to increase risk include artificial sweeteners and artificially sweetened drinks, as well as chips, fizzy drinks, cereals and instant foods.

The relationship between nutrition and mental health is critical, and it’s important to understand what you’re consuming. Sometimes, processed foods are a choice due to convenience and busyness, but replacing some ultra-processed foods with healthier alternatives can be a good first step.
