Does anyone ever think about how theater actors look at us, the audience?
Does it occur to anyone that the actors personally make fun of the audience to whom they often play complete nonsense, but are the flat performances that fill the theaters ?
Do you know the two questions the top visitor asks at checkout?
– How long is the play?
– Is she funny?
In a conversation with our actors, I heard the painful confession that the audience dies of joy and laughter until they are tired when they hear swearing from the stage. If there is no swearing – it is not so funny. The more accurate the conversation, the wilder the laughter and applause.
Theaters rarely put on heavy productions that drain the strength of the cast, because the work for them is very good, and they are played for a short time – the audience is very grateful have tired in a few shows. When it is very simple, however, with a lot of shouting, flat jokes and a strong sound “people” – great joy, great laughter, a good goal.
Actors also know their audience and judge them as well. And they know where and in front of whom they can’t pay for anything really valuable and intelligent, because no one will understand them.
And this is the side of the theater that no one thinks about.
To be sure, I’m posting a picture from a scene in London – there’s no room for interpretation with the actors I talked about 🙂
