San Antonio. Shohei Ohtani underwent arthroscopic surgery today to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder, an injury the Los Angeles Dodgers star suffered on October 26 during the second game of the World Series.
The Dodgers hoped that the Japanese player, capable of shining both on the pitch and on the mound, will be ready for the preseason in February.
Ohtani injured his non-throwing shoulder sliding into second base on a steal attempt. The play resulted in a shoulder dislocation.
The Japanese returned to play the next three games, helping the Dodgers beat the Yankees in five games to win the championship.
The surgery was performed by Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles.
After the injury, Ohtani went just 1 for 11 and received a walk in the World Series. However, his presence strengthened a lineup that had relied on his production throughout the campaign.
The 30-year-old player contributed one of the best regular seasons in history. He became the first player in history with 50 home runs and 50 steals in the same season.
He signed a 10-year, $700 million contract with the Dodgers last year.
It remains to be seen if the surgery will affect Ohtani’s expected return as a pitcher in 2025. The right-hander underwent surgery on his throwing elbow during the preseason, which prevented him from taking the mound in 2024.
The Dodgers open the preseason at the beginning of February, a few days before most clubs, because they plan to play the Tokyo Series, against the Chicago Cubs, on March 18 and 19.
