Dodgers beat Yankees and increase lead in World Series

Los Angeles. Yoshinobu Yamamoto allowed just one hit in 6 1/3 innings, Freddie Freeman homered for the second straight night and the Los Angeles Dodgers hit three early homers off Carlos Rodón to beat the New York Yankees 4-2 on Saturday, who extended their lead in the World Series to 2-0.

Tommy Edman and Teoscar Hernández also homered for the Dodgers.

After the Yankees came close on Giancarlo Stanton’s RBI single in the ninth inning against Blake Treinen, Alex Vesia came on in relief with the bases loaded and retired pinch-hitter Jose Trevino with a first-pitch fly ball to save the game.

Yamamoto allowed Juan Soto’s home run in the third inning. However, the Japanese retired his last 11 batters and 15 of his last 16.

Dominican Soto also singled in the ninth and scored on Stanton’s hit that bounced off third base. Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled and Anthony Rizzo was hit by a pitch, loading the bases. Treinen struck out Anthony Volpe before Vesia came on in relief.

Game 3 is scheduled for Monday night at Yankee Stadium. Forty-five of the 56 teams that have had a 2-0 lead in the World Series have gone on to win the title.

Ohtani, injured

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani injured his left arm during the seventh inning of Game 2 of the World Series on Saturday against the New York Yankees when he tried to steal second base. The severity of the injury was not immediately clear.

Ohtani clutched his left forearm after shortstop Anthony Volpe tagged him for the final out of the inning by sliding feet first. He lay near the base for a couple of minutes before trainers attended to him and he left the field.

Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reported from the Dodgers dugout that the problem was with Ohtani’s left shoulder.

The Japanese superstar — and presumed National League MVP — went 0-for-3 with a walk in the game, which the Dodgers led 4-1. He is 1 for 8 in the first two games of the Fall Classic and is hitting .260 with three home runs and 10 RBIs in his first postseason in the majors.

Most of Ohtani’s injuries since arriving in the majors in 2018 have been pitching-related, including major surgeries on his right elbow in 2018 and last year. The two-way phenom hasn’t pitched this year, but he became the first player in major league history with at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a season.
