The processes in the space of the center-left have intensified. Despite the differences, with an ideological and political sign, they are looking for collective elaborations of a visionary program with a pro-popular orientation. But what is always required is a clear strategy for who will benefit and who will be hurt…
For his part, Dimitris Stratoulis, secretary of the People’s Unity – Insubordinate Left, emphasizes that the processes do not concern forces of the Left which are at rift with the ruling classes who are looting the people and the country.
The deterioration of the ND is increasing due to popular dissatisfaction with the consequences of its policies: punctuality, housing problem, disintegration of public health, lack of protection from natural disasters, etc.
However, her government continues its anti-popular policies, because there is no political pole – even systemic – that opposes it and claims government power with an alternative policy with pro-popular elements. That is why the ND’s losses are directed at abstention – far right and not at SYRIZA, PASOK which had a reduction in votes in the European elections despite the great abstention (SYRIZA and in percentages).
The crisis in SYRIZA takes on degenerative characteristics, without substantial political differences between the contenders. PASOK cannot be the alternative to ND because it does not propose anything different.
The deterioration of the parties of the center-left has pan-European – and not only – characteristics, because they were incorporated into the choices of neoliberal capitalism and the dominant TINA doctrine (there is no alternative), losing their contact or even finding themselves against the popular strata. Also, because in the conditions of stabilization of neoliberalism, the ruling classes do not tolerate concessions to the popular classes. That is why the center-left parties cannot present an alternative policy, even within the limits of the old social democracy. Thus, they shrink and the popular strata turn to the authentic exponents of neoliberal politics or to the extreme right or are politically marginalized.
Forces from PASOK, SYRIZA and sections of the ruling class are pushing them to cooperate, forming a systemic alternative to the ND government. The success of this effort will depend on their internal party developments (SYRIZA crisis, election of a new PASOK president). However, it is difficult because the ruling class still supports the Mitsotakis government which serves its interests.
The processes in the center-left do not concern us in the People’s Unity – Insubordinate Left, because contrary to it we are at rift with the ruling classes that are looting the people and the country.
However, we want to meet in the social struggles and in the dialogue for the reconstruction of the unifying insubordinate Left with popular people disappointed by the government and by the inability of the center-left to oppose it.
In conditions of extreme neo-liberalism and authoritarianism, the rise of the far-right, aggravated popular problems, the only way out for the defense of popular interests is the unity of the militant leftist forces in order to form a pole of militant opposition, support for the struggles and promotion of an alternative proposal.
A first step has already been taken with the formation of the electoral cooperation MeRA25 Subversive Ecological Left United Initiative, from MeRA25, Popular Unity – Unruly Left, Competitive Left and unaffiliated activists of the Left and radical ecology. However, further steps must be taken to stabilize this unifying effort and for its participation and co-formation by other left-wing forces.
This unity cannot be built on the acceptance of neoliberal policies, but on programmatic bases that give solutions with struggles to the people’s problems and open ways for deeper anti-neoliberal, pro-people radical changes.
The fighting forces of society and the Left can and must prevent the government from passing its anti-social policies and the extreme right and fascism from raising their heads.
