Documentation Center of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg – SWR2

The winning design for the extension of the Documentation and Cultural Center of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg is controversial: for some it is a giant block that does not fit into the old town, for others the template for a potential architectural lighthouse. On October 18th, critics and representatives of the planning side met for an open dialogue.

The Documentation and cultural center of German Sinti and Roma in Heidelberg’s old town houses not only an exhibition but also the Central Council of the two minorities. The center was opened in 1997 and is now to be renovated and expanded. An architectural competition was announced for this. Since the winning design was announced at the end of July, there has been criticism. Some feel that the planned building doesn’t fit into the historical surroundings – it’s too big and too massive.
