Documentary ‘Resilience: fight against corona’

Documentary ‘Resilience: fight against corona’ shows the corona crisis of the most affected hospital in the Netherlands. Can be seen on Videoland from 11 September

Work from home as much as possible, keep a distance of 1.5 meters, wash your hands more often and cough into your elbow. Six months ago, nobody expected this to become the ‘new normal’. In the documentary ‘Resilience: fight against corona’ by filmmaker Marc Pos, we return to the place that was the hotspot of the crisis: in Uden, Brabant.

Bernhoven

The Bernhoven regional hospital suddenly found itself in the epicenter of a Brabant corona fire. What do you do if you can help 150 people, but 600 corona patients have to be admitted? We see corona through the eyes of patients, doctors and nurses themselves. ‘Resilience: fight against corona’ can be seen on Videoland from 11 September.

Managing director Van den Enden: ‘On March 4 we tested the first positive patient and on March 8 we saw that it was very wrong. We realized that if this continued, we would see numbers doubling every three days. That would mean a tidal wave of patients would come our way. The rest of the Netherlands did not know this yet. And we saw the need to start sharing that sense of urgency.

Very scary time

It was also a very frightening time because we were not sure if we could help all the sick people here. With this documentary, everyone can see that the hospital was forced into a corona center within a few days, thanks to the fantastic team. ‘

Filmmaker Marc Pos (including Eurovision Song Contest 2021, the Secret of the Master): ‘It was a bizarre period. While the whole of the Netherlands was indoors, my colleagues and I went to shoot in Uden. In the past six months, we have gotten a unique insight into the epicenter of coronaland, because we were already allowed to run at the beginning of the virus. We were fly on the wall seven days a week on many important decisions. All facets associated with a crisis have been recorded: the stress, hard work, grief, powerlessness, but also the love for the profession and the gratitude of the patients. This special insight paints a unique picture of the resilience of healthcare staff in times of crisis. ‘

Serial

Bernhoven is a regional hospital in Uden. If the corona virus breaks out in the Netherlands, it is this Brabant hospital that lies at the heart of the outbreak. Every effort must be made to cope with the influx of patients, as there are 150 beds, but in the end more than 600 people will have to be admitted to this hospital’s catchment area. The camera is given free access while this hospital is writing history: doctors, nurses and support services such as logistics, technology and cleaning work overtime.

The board and the Outbreak Management Team are in a daily battle to keep the hospital available for new patients so that the hospital does not end up in code black. There is a lack of beds, people, materials, equipment and assistance. But no lack of inventiveness, flexibility and perseverance. A story about human resilience in a time of crisis.
