Documentary film evenings for the exhibition “Glückauf -Film ab! Cinema and film history of the Ruhr area” starts on October 1st, 2024

Film cameras have been aimed at the Ruhr area for almost 130 years – initially only during imperial visits and disasters, later primarily at the industrial backdrop, which is spectacular, especially for outsiders. Many documentary films have been made since 1897.

Starting on October 1st Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site and in Glückauf film studio the documentary film evenings, which present rare samples from the region’s rich film heritage. Paul Hofmann from the will be the moderator Cinematheque in the Ruhr area expertly throughout the evening. Exciting guests are available for a film discussion and questions. The 13 part serieswhich will run until February 18, 2025, covers a wide range of topics from mining accidents, zeppelin rides and war events to everyday documentation in the workers’ settlements, cinema culture and sporting events to structural change and the new face of the region.

The Prelude On Tuesday, October 1st, 2024, at 6 p.m., at the Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site, the documentary film evening will be held under the title “From another century. From another time”. The program includes five films from the early days of cinematography in the Rhenish-Westphalian industrial area from 1908 to 1921.

Attending the documentary film evenings is free of charge.

Venues are Hall 6 at the UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein, Gelsenkirchener Str. 181, 45309 Essen and the Glückauf film studio, Rüttenscheider Str. 2, 45128 Essen.

Duration: 2-3 hours.
