An FBI document leaked to the media revealed that agents have the ability to access Apple’s WhatsApp and iMessages in real time.
The report has been widely released, detailing that the FBI is capable of collecting data using a court order or subpoena.
“The Science and Technology and Operational Technology divisions of the FBI reveal the different means available to the agency to extract or access confidential data of the users of nine messaging platforms,” it was stated.
In this regard, it was indicated that the agency can obtain data from iMessage from Apple, Line, Signal, Telegram, Threema, Viber, WeChat from Tencent, Meta’s WhatsApp and Wickr.
The FBI points out that real-time information about a user and their activities can be obtained thanks to the metadata it generates.
It was reported that the FBI can access contacts and communications records.
The American Union of Freedoms has denounced that the mechanism is devastating for journalists and the media.
“That WhatsApp offers all this information is devastating for a journalist who contact a trusted sourcel ”, alerted Daniel Kahn Gillmor.
“The US agency has the right to access the actual messagess sent and received that can be stored in iCloud ”, it was added.
According to the FBI, WhatsApp and iMessage are the most permissive when it comes to delivering information.
