In March, police searched his doctor’s office and personal premises for the second time. The reason: suspicions of issuing false medical certificates for exemption from the obligation to wear a protective mask. Doctors such as Dr. Schiffmann, who publicly oppose hygiene rules, are a minority among the medical profession in Germany. But they are very noisy and very dangerous. Because their patients trust them, and thanks to their profession, they also enjoy the trust of society.

As SPIEGEL recalls on this occasion, there is no nationally representative survey in Germany on the proportion of doctors who are skeptical of the pandemic. But according to medical organizations, their number is at least a three-digit number. In Berlin alone, more than 250 complaints have been filed since the beginning of the pandemic, concerning 150 doctors. In 27 of the cases, it is a matter of bad faith or deliberate falsification of certificates for not wearing masks.
“These skeptics damage the image of the profession,” a spokesman for the Berlin Medical Chamber told the paper. The same opinion is shared by the president of the professional medical organization in Hamburg, Pedram Emami, for whom it is completely unacceptable that “colleagues deny the danger of the virus, which poses a serious threat to health – especially for people at risk, and is a huge challenge for health. system, especially when such allegations are devoid of any argumentation ”.
Medical unions are determined to sanction this type of behavior on the part of their members. Sanctions can range from reprimands to fines, and professional courts can impose higher fines of several thousand euros. It is also possible to freeze or even revoke the approbation, as has already been done in the case of Dr. Schiffmann: the approbation commission at the Baden-Württemberg Health Service is investigating the matter and is expected to come up with a decision soon.
