Doctors urge people to increase immunity to prevent pneumonia

for parents, light exercise only

Jakarta (ANTARA) – Pulmonary specialists from the Indonesian Lung Doctors Association (PDPI) recommend the public to increase their immunity to prevent pneumonia or inflammation of the lungs caused by viruses or bacteria.

Dr. Dr. Erlina Burhan, Sp.P(K) in his statement to reporters online in Jakarta, Wednesday, said that the incidence of pneumonia often occurs in the elderly and children due to a low immune system.

“We always have the principle that prevention is much better than treatment, what we want to convey to the public is to improve their immune system,” said Erlina.

Efforts to prevent pneumonia are by increasing the immune system, namely carrying out clean and healthy living behaviors, eating balanced nutrition, not drinking alcohol, not smoking, getting enough rest, and managing stress so that it doesn’t last long.

Erlina emphasized that parents or the elderly should do light exercise for 15 to 30 minutes at least three times a week.

“For older people only light exercise, which can be tolerated by their age, and also often. So don’t just do it once in a while, say three to five times per week, at most half an hour, with movements that are not too tiring. If this is done, it is hoped that immunity will increase,” said Erlina.

The incidence rate of pneumonia cases in Indonesia is around 25 to 40 per 10,000 population. The elderly are a group that is susceptible to pneumonia because the body’s immune system begins to decline.

In addition to the elderly, children, especially toddlers, are also susceptible to pneumonia because their immune systems are not yet perfect. In addition, the behavior of toddlers who often play on the floor and put objects in their mouths can also cause bacteria to enter the body.

Pneumonia is an inflammatory or inflammatory condition that occurs in the lung tissue. This inflammation can be caused by several microorganisms such as viruses, bacteria, or fungi.

In addition to severe pneumonia, which can be caused by the Sars CoV 2 virus that causes COVID-19, severe pneumonia can also be caused by pneumococcal bacteria.

Erlina explained that the symptoms of pneumonia caused by this bacterium cause inflammation and cause coughing. Cough suffered by a person who has pneumonia due to bacteria usually coughs up phlegm, with thick, greenish or yellowish phlegm.

“When the sputum cannot be removed, it will cause congestion in the sufferer,” he said.
