Doctors shed light on unexpected new symptoms of coronavirus

Although it has become the main topic of conversation, Covid-19 remains a relatively unknown disease. Scientists who try to unravel its mysteries often walk on eggshells. Gray areas include the effects of the coronavirus on the human body, whether short or long term. Indeed, if certain symptoms are quite recurrent (cough, fever …), others appear little by little in people who have alerted their doctor.

According to The American Journal of Emergency Medicine, hiccups are among the symptoms observed in patients suffering from the coronavirus. The study published by the medical journal presents the case of a 62-year-old man positive for covid-19. The patient with severe disease has been observed to experience constant hiccups throughout the duration of his infection. He is not the only one in this case. The symptom has already been observed in other patients, as reported by several scientific journals. Doctors are not surprised, however, to see patients victims of such a phenomenon. It would be the consequence of the damage caused by the coronavirus to the lungs of patients.

Another symptom observed in a few patients at the start of the pandemic is now tending to become more frequent. According to a King’s College study of 336,000 patients, 17% of them presented with rashes and itching. The authors of the study thus wished to warn against what they consider to be a “red flag”, too little taken seriously at present, as the Huffington Post underlines. A researcher has even gone so far as to advocate quarantining people with this symptom, even if it is the only sign of potential contamination with the coronavirus.

In long-term patients, hair loss is also noted. In this case, there has not yet been a scientific study attesting to the phenomenon. Doctors at Cleveland Hospital have sounded the alarm, however, indicating that they are seeing this symptom in more and more patients who have been facing the disease for several months. The American actress Alyssa Milano, who had to face the Covid for many months, also mentioned this problem in a video posted on Instagram. The star explains that she is now healed but is losing her hair abundantly. According to specialists, the phenomenon is explained by the stress suffered by long-term patients.

Finally, a study published in The Lancet reports inflammation of the thyroid in some coronavirus patients. Researchers at Cardiff University have shown that this disorder could be seen more often than people think. This was confirmed by Italian scientists who estimated that thyroid problems were observed in 20% of the patients studied.
