Doctors said Bruce Lee, who until now is considered the legend of kung fu, died from drinking too much water, nearly 50 years after his death.

The Hollywood martial arts star died aged 32, in 1973 while in Hong Kong, according to the British Daily Mail.

An autopsy at the time revealed that Bruce Lee had died of brain swelling, and some doctors believed this may have been as a result of taking a painkiller, and others thought he suffered acute sunstroke.

Now, researchers have examined the evidence, indicating that Bruce Lee died of hyponatremia, or the inability of the kidneys to excrete excess water.

The researchers wrote, “We believe that Bruce Lee died of a specific form of impaired kidney function, which is the inability to excrete an adequate amount of water to maintain the body’s water balance, and this leads to hyponatremia, cerebral edema (swelling of the brain) and death within hours if excessive water intake is not accompanied by excretion of water in the urine, which is consistent with the timeline that occurred with Bruce Lee’s death.”

Bruce Lee had admitted to taking a dose of cannabis before his death, and cannabis consumption has been found to greatly increase the feeling of thirst and the need for water.

Symptoms of hyponatremia include nausea or vomiting, low blood pressure, loss of energy, muscle weakness, twitching or cramps, insomnia, low mood, headache, fatigue, seizures, or coma.

This condition is treated by taking op diuretics

Intravenous drip of sodium solution or sodium-binding drugs or hemodialysis.
