It’s hard to describe in words what a cruel life test fate has prepared for 20-year-old Loren Schauers. A young man from Great Falls, Montana, suffered a serious work accident and had to decide whether he wanted to undergo a terrifying procedure that would remove half of his body.
He made a living as a construction worker. In September 2019, during work on the bridge, he accidentally fell from a height of more than fifteen meters. He fell into a forklift, which amputated his arm and crushed his pelvis. Loren was unconscious, so the family was faced with a difficult decision. The doctors told them that if they were to save his life, surgeons had to perform a hemicorporectomy, which means amputating an entire part of his body from the waist down.
“His mom was given power of attorney to make decisions for him. However, it was an impossible task for her. When she gets the surgery, he might end up hating her for it. If he doesn’t undergo her, he will die and she will feel like she killed her son,“ recalls in Mirror Loren’s loving wife of twenty-three years to Sabie Reich. There was also a risk that he would die during the operation itself. Fortunately, the young man was finally able to decide for himself.
He spoke clearly
His sister is said to have fought hard to wake him up from artificial sleep. His breathing mask was removed and he was finally able to communicate. Despite his serious condition, the young man managed to provide consultations that brought the situation closer to him and he was able to make a responsible decision.
“He looked them in the eye and said he didn’t care if he was left with just his head on a plate. Let them just take him into surgery and save his life,” recalls Loren’s wife. “He was a fighter, and that really gave us a lot of hope,” supplies. The proposed operation, which was finally approved, therefore resulted in the removal of the entire lower half of the body.
For the past two years, Loren has been living without legs and right forearm with the assistance of his devoted wife. The couple have given fans a glimpse into their miserable life on YouTube, where they have already amassed 477,000 subscribers. Through this, they are now trying to collect money from people for a new bionic arm for Loren. Both fight bravely together. However, they complain that the most common question people ask is how they can have sex and get close. “It’s so disrespectful. No one gives them the right to ask this,” Sabia is angry. According to the Mirror, doctors also took Lorraine’s sperm, but unfortunately it was no longer fertile.
