Jakarta (ANTARA) – Internal medicine specialist, consultant for metabolic endocrine diabetes, Dr. R. Bowo Pramono, Sp.PD-KEMD reminded the public not to consume sugary or sugary foods and drinks because they are at risk of developing diabetes.
“Consumption of sugar in moderation. Not prohibited, but in moderation. In this way, the health of our pancreas is sufficiently maintained so that it cannot become diabetes,” said the doctor of Dr. RSUP. Sardjito Yogyakarta attended a virtual speech on Monday.
He said that foods and drinks that contain sugar, especially carbohydrates, are actually needed by the body. However, if consumed in excess, a buildup of sugar or glucose will occur in the body.
Bowo explained that when a person eats foods that contain sugar, the pancreas will function by secreting insulin, which converts glucose into energy and is distributed to the body’s cells.
Insulin also helps control glucose levels in the body. However, if a person consumes too high or too much sugar, the pancreas and insulin are not functioning optimally.
“If the pancreas secretes and continues to work to produce more insulin than usual, one day it will automatically get tired. When you’re tired, diabetes will occur, “Bowo said.
Recommend healthy people to check their blood sugar at least once a year. This is because there are still many people who do not realize they have diabetes and subsequent action may be too late if the person has just been to the hospital in an advanced condition.
“Warn. If there are our friends, relatives or ourselves who are easily hungry or eat a lot, then they often urinate, drink a lot, accompanied by weight loss. He eats a lot but, how come, his body is skinny, we have to suspect he’s diabetic. Check it out, “he said.
Bowo explained that diabetics may appear thin or lose weight because insulin is unable to transfer blood glucose to the body’s cells so that the body’s cells will starve.
On the other hand, obese people are also prone to diabetes. Bowo pointed out that obesity is dangerous because it can interfere with insulin production. The conditions of obesity, he said, can also extend to other diseases such as diseases related to cancer, diabetes and heart disease.
“Obesity is something we have to fight. We lose weight to normal. Not skinny, but normal,” he said.
By not consuming excess sugar, Bowo said it will also decrease the risk of developing other diseases caused by sugar.
To find out more about individuals’ nutritional needs, including carbohydrates, Bowo suggested consulting a nutritionist. In addition, she also reminded the audience to live a healthy life and exercise so that the sugar that was consumed does not accumulate in the body.
