On June 19, the 53-year-old Italian took part in a trip from Penzence to Sankt Virico d’Orch with his tricycle. He collided with an oncoming truck and suffered severe head injuries.

He underwent three head surgeries in the following weeks. As the Siena Hospital announced on Thursday, the health of the Dzanardi is still serious and it will take a few days to assess the situation.

Predictions of his recovery are not being disclosed at the moment, but the hospital promises to report on the news next week.

Dzanardi has gained fame in sports with his perseverance and selflessness. On September 15, 2001, in a CART series race in Germany in a Dzanardi car, which went out of the boxes, Alex’s Tajani car was hit at a speed of about 320 kilometers per hour. Taljani was not seriously injured in the accident, but Dzanardi’s life was endangered for several days. The doctors managed to save his life, but Dzanardi lost both legs. He became a two-time CART champion during his career.

The next year after the accident, he was back on the track and in 2007 turned to parasports. In the last two Paralympic Games, the Italian has won four gold and two silver medals in a wheelchair, and also aimed at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. He is also a twelve-time world champion.

Between 1991 and 1999, Dzanardi competed in 41 Formula One (F-1) World Championships, representing the Jordan, Minardi, Lotus and Williams teams.
