The doctors at the “Sfanta Maria” Children’s Hospital in Iasi draw attention to the fact that the season of seasonal respiratory viruses has begun and children are being brought to the hospital in increasing numbers.
The spokesperson of the “Sfanta Maria” Iasi Children’s Hospital, Dr. Solange Rosu, says that the cold weather will generate an increase in addressability at UPU through seasonal respiratory viruses, influenza, bronchiolitis through respiratory syncytial virus, COVID-19.
“These viruses can coexist and generate clinical manifestations of different intensity depending on the particularity of the case. Acute respiratory infections represent a constant public health problem that causes morbidity and mortality, including in the pediatric population. That is why we have proposed to update the absolutely necessary information for the prevention and treatment of these conditions. Prevention and control measures for respiratory infections are a key component of the practice to reduce transmission in health environments and in any community”, said the UPU coordinator of the ‘Sfanta Maria’ Iasi Children’s Hospital, Dr. Solange Tamara Rosu, according to Agerpres.
The same source mentions that the risk groups for severe forms of respiratory viruses are infants, premature babies, children in the age group of 1-5 years.
“They can develop severe forms, especially children under the age of two, due to the lack of immunity acquired naturally through contact with seasonal respiratory viruses. As well as children with chronic respiratory, cardiac, metabolic, hematological, renal, neurological diseases”, explained Dr. Solange Tamara Rosu.
Regarding prevention, the UPU coordinator of the “Sfanta Maria” Children’s Hospital in Iasi recommends correct hand hygiene by using soap and water for at least 20-30 seconds or using an antiseptic.
Also, the doctor recommends the correct use of the protective mask, in the presence of respiratory diseases in the community, avoiding socializing in crowded and closed spaces.
Another recommendation concerns the natural ventilation of spaces where current activities are carried out, as well as the vaccination of risk groups, i.e. infants over 6 months of age, children and adolescents, but also the vaccination of occupational groups at risk in the health system and the education. The doctor also recommends vaccinating family members in which there is a child at risk for severe forms of the disease.
“Immunization against these viruses remains the best protection for reducing the risk of serious illness, hospitalization, long-term impact on health and even death in particular situations. The flu vaccine is recommended during this period, before the start of the flu season, in order to ensure optimal protection in good time. For patients between 6 months and 8 years of age who receive the flu vaccine for the first time or whose vaccination status is unknown, two doses of the vaccine at an interval of four weeks are recommended. The rest of the children receive only one dose this season”, said Dr. Solange Tamara Rosu.
