Doctor, doctor of medical sciences and TV presenter Elena Malysheva on the air of the program “Live healthy!” said that laxatives can increase the risk of developing dementia by 51 percent. This was reported on the portal News.ru.

According to Elena Malysheva, laxatives wash out the beneficial microflora from the intestines, which maintains the strength of the blood-brain barrier. This structure of the brain regulates the penetration of toxic substances and compounds into the central nervous system that can damage the nerve cells of both the brain and spinal cord. “The blood-brain barrier becomes impervious to toxic substances thanks to the intestinal microflora. When we constantly wash and clean everything, the barrier becomes full of holes and then the nerve cells are under attack,” the specialist explained. Toxic substances that destroy nerve cells can enter the brain, which leads to dementia, and also increases the risk of stroke by 65 percent.
