It is certainly not the first time that a film has not been allowed to appear in a certain country. It’s happening to the great Marvel movie now too Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness† The director’s movie Sam Raimi contains something that is unacceptable according to local authorities.
The news comes via an article from The Hollywood Reporter. Like Eternals in West Side Story the film is banned in Saudi Arabia because of a homosexual character in the film.
The new character America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez) is gay in the comics and that is a sticking point for the Saudi Arabian government. Local policy dictates that homosexuality in media is illegal. It is not yet known whether the young Chavez in the film is also openly gay.
Chavez very important character
Director Sam Raimi previously said in an interview with Empire magazine that Chavez is important in the film.
“Strange is still learning about the Multiverse,” zei Raimi. “And then there’s a character who can travel through it. He’s always such a know-it-all, and to have to learn from a kid now is probably a smart move.”
There is a good chance that many (surrounding) countries will go along with the ban. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be released in Dutch cinemas on May 4.
