And chinese doctor who practices his profession in Australia was suspended after a controversy over a patient to whom he prescribed a diet based on herbal tea and fastingsince the woman finally died of cardiac arrest.

Dr. Shuquan Liu was suspended for a period of three years after a series of failures in the patient’s treatment. The case occurred when the doctor, known for treating people such as former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, prescribed his fasting program and herbal infusions to the 41-year-old woman.

According to the Australian media News.com.au, the patient was trying to lose weight, but had a history of heart problems. In January 2018, the woman went to Liu’s clinic 16 times. On February 2, he was admitted after suffering a heart attack and was diagnosed potassium deficiency y arrhythmia. Six days later he died.

The New South Wales Civil and Administrative Tribunal did not directly attribute the death to Liu’s program but highlighted the lack of adequate examinations and investigations into the patient’s health before prescribing treatment.

During all consultations, the doctor did not carry out essential checks, such as blood pressure and the heart ratejustifying that such practices were part of the “western medicine” and not of the traditional medicine chinawhich he followed.

The court stated that the doctor practiced at a “significantly lower” standard than expected and that his failures were “egregious” and evidenced a “serious lack of care.” As a result, he was found guilty of professional misconduct and banned from practicing medicine for three years, and his program was also questioned for its lack of official recognition in Chinese medicine.

“Dr. Liu appears to have expressed no real remorse and demonstrated total lack of knowledge of the risks that its Wellness 101 Program poses to patients. Dr. Liu appears to have continued to fail to recognize the risk to patients of carrying out his program. Furthermore, he appears to continue to believe in the effectiveness of his program, despite the expert evidence provided to him throughout the history of this matter, which highlights its risks,” the decision reads.
