Doctor Neslihan Celebi: Veins are patient for a long time

Do not wait for varicose veins to hurt, advises doctor Neslihan Celebi for special vein therapy.

Neslihan Celebi is an elective doctor in Graz and Leutschach. She performs varicose vein therapies and iron treatments in her practice. The WOCHE visited you at Arnfelserstraße 10.
We go to the ophthalmologist or dentist regularly. Is there a guideline for when veins should be checked or treated by the doctor?

Neslihan CELEBI: If you feel pain, swelling, itching and pulling in your legs, definitely. An examination is also recommended for visible, but painless, varicose veins. Painless varicose veins (Latin: varices) can also lead to thrombosis, open legs and pulmonary embolism. Varicose veins can also cause itching. When patients start scratching, these areas become inflamed and can be the beginning of an open leg.

Neslihan Celebi, vein therapy expert:
“Patients keep telling that they have already been to the venereologist. But that is the specialist in sexually transmitted diseases and has nothing to do with the veins.”

Are sore and restless legs an alarm signal for varicose veins?
CELEBI: Varicose veins do not always have to be the cause of painful, pulling and restless legs. Bulging discs and herniated discs can also trigger leg pain. Restless legs at night can also be an indication of an iron deficiency. In my ordination there is a holistic look and if necessary, iron infusions are given according to the blood count. Other symptoms of iron deficiency can be hair loss, constant fatigue, listlessness, heart problems, headaches and even depression, or it is just a magnesium deficiency.

Which examination methods do you consider particularly useful?
CELEBI: It is important to have a precise control with ultrasound, color duplex and to inspect superficial varicose veins with the help of a special light.

Do all varicose veins need treatment?
CELEBI: For painless cases that are not yet advanced, I recommend a cure with vein-strengthening capsules and creams or gels and give the patient a vein gymnastics session that I have put together. See some exercises on the right.
When the skin on the legs looks good, I try as best I can to refrain from treatment and treat it conservatively. Here it is advisable to take or apply high-quality vital substances with high doses of vitamin C, aescin, quercetin, red vine leaves, horse chestnut, lemon essence oil and witch hazel.

Vein gymnastics

Just a few minutes of gymnastics a day can effectively prevent vein problems or alleviate existing diseases.
These exercises should be done at regular intervals, ideally a few minutes a day.
The exercises are designed so that they can be easily incorporated into your daily routine. Ideally, no socks should be worn.
In stand:
1. Roll your feet alternately from the tip of your toes to your heels, making sure you maintain an upright posture (also works when sitting)
2. Now, with both feet at the same time, lift your toes, then lift your heels, doing rolling movements like a swing
3. Hold your whole foot in a bent position as you would when skiing, keeping your feet hip-width apart, tensing your abdominal muscles and keeping your spine straight, slightly bent forward
In this position, carefully lift your heels off the floor, hold them lifted and assume a straight, stretched position with your entire upper body. Perform this movement ten times.
