Doctor: Heart sufferers are most at risk if exposed to COVID-19

The virus attacks the human respiratory tract then to the lungs then to the heart, especially in elderly people in old age or people who have congenital diseases are too at risk

Tulungagung, East Java (ANTARA) – Heart and blood vessel specialist dr. Iskak Tulungagung, dr. Fitrianti Suciati Laitupa, Sp.Jp stated, heart sufferers are one of the two groups most at risk if exposed to COVID-19.

“This virus attacks the human respiratory tract, then to the lungs and then to the heart. Especially in elderly people in old age, or people who have congenital diseases are too risky,” said dr. Suciati in Tulungagung, Saturday.

He said, heart disease is a health problem that is closely related to the corona virus (COVID-19).

When the heart has a problem, this virus will very easily enter and then it will damage the nerves of the heart, causing instability of heart function.

“In the era of the COVID-19 pandemic, it is very risky for people with heart disease. Therefore it is very important to maintain heart health,” he said.

Dr. Fitrianti explained, there are risks that can cause fatality (fatality risk) when a heart sufferer is infected with the corona virus. There are 3 worsening conditions of the heart that can occur, namely;

First, (the virus) infects the heart and affects heart function so it has to work harder. As a result, the heart rate becomes fast.

Second, the virus will damage the heart muscle cells causing inflammation of the heart (myocarditis or inflammation of the heart muscle).

If this condition occurs, the effect can weaken and damage the ‘electrical’ system of the heart. This condition will make it more difficult for the heart to pump blood and cause abnormal heart rhythms.

“And thirdly, it causes a kind of ‘thromboembolism’ (pulmonary blood vessel clotting) in the form of blood clots which then clog the blood vessels and block blood flow to the tissues in the lungs, causing the death of lung tissue,” he said.

dr. Fitrianti reminded that there are several conditions a person has to go to the hospital if they have heart problems.

There are four emergency conditions experienced, ranging from left chest pain, shortness of breath, cold sweat, chest palpitations.

“If this happens, you should ask for emergency medical help from the hospital. While waiting for the ambulance to arrive, the first aid that can be done is that the patient must be calm and take a deep breath sitting relaxed,” he said.
