Doctor ex-President Georgia: Saakashvili in bad condition due to hunger strike

Former Georgia President Mikhail Saakashvili is getting worse, his doctor said on TV. The former leader has now been in jail for ten days and has been on hunger strike for the same number of days.

“His condition has deteriorated, he has difficulty talking and walking,” said doctor Nikoloz Kipsjidze on Mtavari Arkhi TV. He is going to ask the authorities to transfer Saakashvili to a hospital.

Saakashvili has been sentenced in absentia to six years in prison for abuse of power. He himself denies these allegations, which he says are politically motivated.

Local elections

The 53-year-old ex-president recently returned to Georgia and was immediately arrested. He hoped to lead his opposition party to victory in local elections. That does not seem to have succeeded so far; the ruling party has received significantly more votes than the opposition. But in the six largest cities there will be a second round of voting.

In recent years, Saakashvili has spent abroad. In the Netherlands – his wife Sandra Roelofs comes from Terneuzen – but especially in Ukraine.
