Fasting during pregnancy is said to cause reduced amniotic fluid, Mother. In fact, there have been many studies examining the link between fasting and amniotic fluid.
Then is it true that fasting during pregnancy causes the amniotic fluid to decrease?
Research published in Journal of Clinical Imaging Science 2016 concluded that fasting has no effect on the amount of amniotic fluid as long as pregnant women pay attention to food intake at dawn and breaking the fast, and fulfill fluid intake.
This study involved 119 pregnant women who were treated with ultrasound scans for almost a month. A total of 61 pregnant women fasted, while 58 pregnant women were the control group. All pregnant women who were studied had breakfast and breakfast regularly every day.
Another study published in Saudi Medical Journal 2004 also found something similar. The results of this study found that Ramadan fasting had no significant effect on decreasing the amniotic fluid index, including the inner sac and its volume.
Then what do doctors think about fasting which is associated with a decrease in amniotic fluid?
The doctor said that fasting can reduce amniotic fluid
Obstetrics and Gynecology Specialist Doctor at Eka Hospital Cibubur, dr. Alexander Mukti, Sp.OG said that during fasting, pregnant women will definitely experience some changes. Although, there is no significant difference in fetal weight during fasting, what will be obvious is the change in amniotic fluid.
“Fasting can reduce fluid intake and affect the amniotic fluid,” Alex said when contacted Hai Bundasome time ago.
This means that the amniotic fluid will decrease if the mother does not really pay attention to fluid intake during fasting or is dehydrated. According to the American Pregnancy Association (APA), dehydration during pregnancy can cause serious pregnancy complications, including low amniotic fluid.
“If the amniotic fluid runs out, the fetus will definitely be in trouble because the central blood flow to the fetus is reduced. The point is that it’s all about oxygen, if the amniotic fluid runs out, the umbilical cord will be clamped, thereby disrupting the oxygen supply to the fetus,” said Alex.
During fasting, fulfilling nutrition is indeed important. But it’s no less important to meet your fluid intake so that you don’t get dehydrated to cause a little amniotic fluid.
Reported Medical News TodayDehydration is a condition when the body loses a lot of fluids. As a result, the body has difficulty carrying out its normal functions.
Dehydration is more common during pregnancy. Most cases of dehydration are mild, but it can be severe and dangerous for the mother and baby.
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant women drink 8-12 glasses per day to prevent dehydration. In addition to aiding digestion, water is needed to form amniotic fluid around the fetus. Water also helps nutrients circulate in the body and removes waste products from the body.

Tips for fulfilling fluid intake during fasting pregnant women
If Mother decides to fast during pregnancy, then she must commit to drinking a lot. Alex advises pregnant women to at least set a target of drinking at least 2 liters of water between iftar and sahur.
As a reminder, you can drink 3 to 4 glasses of water when breaking your fast. The dose can be divided, namely drinking mineral water at Isha time, before going to bed, and at dawn.
But, that’s all just an estimate of the fulfillment of liquid mineral water from a glass. Mothers can set their own time to consume liquids until 2 liters are met from the time of breaking the fast until dawn.
Apart from mineral water, fluid intake can be obtained from other sources. Some of the drinks or foods contain high water.
“Mothers can get liquids from coconut water, syrup water, or fruits that are consumed at iftar and sahur,” said Alex.
