Dobrovský & Šídlo: The year 1968 was a little stolen from me, says Jiří Mádl – News List

Exactly twenty years ago, the teenage comedy “Snowboarders” about two young people experiencing their first big adventures in the mountains was released in Czech cinemas. 630 thousand people came to the cinema to see it. Seventeen-year-old Jiří Mádl played one of the main roles in it at the time.

Today he is a director and his new film Waves is celebrating an unexpected, but more successful, success. In its first week, it reached 125,000 viewers and got people who usually wait comfortably for the movie they want to watch to appear on some of the streaming platforms to visit it the cinema.

Jiří Mádl worked on the film that took place in the legendary newsroom about the international life of Czechoslovak Radio in 1967-68 for more than ten years, and during the preparation he was able to meet several of the members end of the newsroom. Along the way, Mádl cast his partner from the Snowboarders, Vojtěch Kotek, in the role of the young Jiří Dienstbier, who was then a member of the editors and later a dissident and the first foreign minister of Soviet.

“I admit that the years 1967-68 were stolen from me at first,” says Jiří Mádl. “I wanted a story full of difficult decisions. Stories like this happen all over world, and we are lucky that they happened here in a very dense form. There are different situations, but some things stand out better in some.’
